How to Update CounterStrikeSharp Safely

Counter-Strike 2 updates often, and CounterStrikeSharp needs to keep up with it. Updating is simple, but doing it without a plan is how servers end up broken on a Friday evening. Follow this order and you can always go back.

1

See what you have now

Run meta list and css_plugins list in the server console. The first shows the CounterStrikeSharp version, the second shows your plugins. Write both down before changing anything.

2

Download the right release

Get the latest release from the official CounterStrikeSharp page on GitHub. Choose the package for your system and the one that includes the runtime, if your server does not have .NET installed yet.

3

Back up and replace

Make a copy of the addons/counterstrikesharp folder. Then stop the server and copy the new files over it. Your configs and plugins stay in place, because they are not part of the release. Check that Metamod is up to date as well.

4

Check that it works

Start the server and run meta list again. The new version should appear, and the plugin list should show your plugins without errors.

5

Recompile if needed

If a plugin shows errors after the update, it was probably built for an older API. Look for a newer release from its author, or recompile it with our compiler using a matching CounterStrikeSharp.API version.

6

If something goes wrong

Stop the server and restore the folder you backed up. You are back where you started in a minute, and you can look for the cause without pressure from your players.

7

Make it a habit

Watch for new CounterStrikeSharp releases after every big game update, and test updates on a test server first when you can. A server that is updated regularly rarely has a bad surprise.
